Shakes, Rattles, Squeaks and Thunks...(Smells and Noises)

!±8± Shakes, Rattles, Squeaks and Thunks...(Smells and Noises)

For the uninformed, identifying where that squeak or thunk is coming from on your car or truck, or determining where that pungent odour is coming from, can be quite disconcerting. However, being cognizant of usual noises and smells emanating from your vehicle will help you nip potential automotive problems in the bud. Early detection of strange sounds or smells coming from your vehicle can help reduce repair costs, and if you are like me, everyone hates to pay those exorbitant fees charged by automotive repair shops these days, right?

Here are some tips to help you identify some of those early tell tale signs, just by using your nose and ears. A very common sound is brake squeal. On domestic vehicles brake squealers are used. These are little pieces of wire that touch the brake rotor when the brakes are applied. Those are designed to alert you the driver, that there is very little brake pad material left, and that it's time to replace the pads. On import vehicles, if you experience brake squeal, it may be dust particles or sharp edges on the surface of the pads rubbing on the rotor. The only way to be sure is to remove the wheel where the offending sound is coming from. The brake pads then need to be removed and checked to see if there are dirt particles or sharp edges on the surface of the pads. Most of the time this has been the primary cause of brake squeal on these vehicles. It can happen if the vehicle is either hot or cold. Inferior brake pad material can definitely add to the brake noise list. Another problem that can happen is experiencing grinding noises when you apply the brakes. When you get grinding noises you have to be very careful, because that is a sure sign that the brake pads or brake shoes have worn down to bare metal. When your brakes are applied you have the metal of the brake pads or brake shoes contacting the brake rotors or brake drums, and that requires an immediate repair.

Other grinding noises coming from your car might be from faulty or worn wheel bearings. Wheel bearing noises are more of a roaring or groaning sound. On most cars, whether front-wheel or rear-wheel drive, that sound would come from the front of the car. To determine which wheel bearing is the culprit, drive the car at approximately 30 mph/50 kph on a quiet road, and for example, if you round a left hand corner, the centrifugal force results in the load being applied to the right wheel. If the grinding is exaggerated, then the wheel bearings on the right side need to be checked to see if there is movement or play in the wheel. Perhaps all that is needed is for the nut to be tightened holding the wheel bearing assembly in place. If the bearing is worn, it will have to be replaced. Conversely, if the grinding noise occurs when the vehicle is negotiating a right hand turn in the road, then the left side (driver's side) wheel bearing will have to be inspected.

The most common sound is that of a blown muffler or leaking exhaust. Most people recognize that sound. But one sound that is quite difficult to diagnose, even from an automotive technician's perspective, is when one experiences a ticking sound coming from the engine compartment. If the ticking sound is experienced on a cold morning, most likely it can be attributed to an exhaust manifold gasket leaking. This noise may be misinterpreted as valve tappet noise. The exhaust manifold gasket leaking noise is the result of the contraction of the cast iron metal of the exhaust manifold and the cast aluminum head on the engine, leaving a tiny gap at the gasket, which allows for the exhaust gases to leak through. In most cases, if the leak is detected within a year, the cure is simply to tighten the manifold bolts. If the gasket is punctured or the problem has persisted for over a year, the gasket will have to be replaced and the manifold assembly machined, due to distortion.

Rumbling sounds coming from the engine compartment may mean that the cooling fan is not in balance and is vibrating, or there may be a worn water pump. The latter would result in a grinding sound similar to wheel bearing noise. A very tight fan belt will exert a load on the water pump impeller and cause the noise to be quite loud. A fan belt adjustment may all that is required to alleviate this problem. If the water pump is leaking anti-freeze, then the only alternative is to replace the unit. Fan belt squeal, experienced when the engine is revving, can be rectified by tightening the fan belt. There are many more noises that can be identified by the average motorist, from a faulty heater fan, power steering pump, air conditioning unit, etc. Unfortunately, these repairs are beyond the scope of the average car owner and best left to a qualified automotive technician.

What are some of the most common automotive smells that can be identified by the vehicle owner? A very common smell is that of burning engine oil. Leaking valve cover gaskets will cause the oil to drip onto the exhaust manifold, resulting in a pungent smell. Usually there is some detectable smoke associated with that as well, which will cause the eyes to water. Tightening the valve cover bolts or nuts may be all that is required, however, in many cases the valve cover gasket will have to be replaced.

Anti-freeze smell is a very sweet smell and is usually detected inside the vehicle. This is usually due to a heater core that is leaking. A green damp spot on the front passenger side carpet or mat is usually evidence of the leak. Unfortunately, this idicates that the heater core, which is similar to a radiator, will have to be replaced.

Electrical smells are very strong, and is a sure sign that something is burning. The plastic insulation around the wires usually melts first and in extreme cases can catch fire. This problem is generally a result of an electrical circuit shorting out in the car. It could be the starter motor shorting out, or the alternator burning out. That odour will enter the vents into the passenger compartment of the vehicle. It will be evident and often obvious where this type of smell is coming from. It emits a smell similar to burning rubber. A starter motor that is jammed in the flywheel will try to keep on spinning until the engine is stopped. That is burning insulation and the temperature on the starter motor can reach several hundred degrees.

Fuel smells can be nauseating. A fuel smell will be a raw smell, similar to the smell you experience when taking off your gas cap when you fill up at the service station. This is usually the result of a leak in the fuel tank, fuel filter, carburetor/fuel injection system or a fuel line in the engine compartment. Most motorists can readily detect fuel smells.

An exhaust leaking smell which is caused by a leaking catalytic converter or leaking exhaust system can be a choking odour that can burn your eyes. If your car has open heater vents or if there is a panel that is rusted or cracked to allow the gases to enter the passenger compartment, which acts like a vacuum, especially if you open your car's windows, then carbon monoxide will enter the vehicle. We are all aware that carbon monoxide in a closed environment can kill you. Exhaust problems should be repaired by a qualified automotive technician as soon as they are detected.

If your car or truck is running a rich fuel mixture, the exhaust emission will smell like fuel. When a vehicle runs rich, it means that raw fuel entering the combustion chamber does not burn completely, and raw fuel comes out of the exhaust.

Finally, automatic transmission fluid smells, particularly with larger vehicles, are a very common problem. When the oil seal is leaking at the rear of the automatic transmission, the torque converter at the front, or seals on the selector shaft will leak oil that falls on the exhaust pipe near the rear of the vehicle. That smell, similar to that of burning engine oil, is a strong odour, but slightly different, will enter the passenger compartment.

Determining the unusual smells and sounds you are experiencing with your vehicle will be of immense help to the mechanic or automotive service technician you decide to take your car or truck to. Today, with increasingly sophisticated cars and trucks, a simple method of pinpointing the problem are will not only give your mechanic or automotive technician a welcome head start in solving your problem, but it will invariably translate into real savings for you. And really, why not use our two investigative senses of smell and hearing? They don't cost us anything to use, do they?

Hardwood Flooring Selection

!±8± Hardwood Flooring Selection

Hardwood flooring is exotic, beautiful, durable and adds value to your home. Although color is the #1 choice for flooring shoppers when deciding on a floor, don't go by color when buying your hardwood floor for very good reason:

Some of the most beautiful and eye-catching hardwoods also happen to be the softest and damage prone. Your pines, walnuts and cherry's have unsurpassed beauty. I've seen many shoppers literally lock their eyes on them and drift towards them like hypnotized zombies.

But these woods are very soft. So soft, you can scratch the sample boards with your fingernails. They are not meant to withstand a family of 7 children with rollerblades, soccer shoes and bicycles being ridden around. Nor are they for elephant sized dogs with claws like werewolves.

So where would you put these hardwood floors? Think of a very low traffic area - a rarely used dining room, your cabin getaway where it doesn't see much action or even an elderly person's home where the wear and tear will be minimal.

PSI's or pounds per square inch measure hardwoods in hardness. The higher the number, the harder the wood. Pines, cherry's and walnuts are around 1000 PSI's. Oaks around 1600. Maples - 2300. Hickory - 2600. This gives you an idea of each hardwood's relative strength.

But don't be deceived.

The question I get a lot of is will a 2600 PSI Hickory Hardwood floor withstand my zoo of a home? Will it scratch? Have you ever seen a tree that doesn't scratch? Look, wood is wood. It's a natural product so yes it will scratch given enough abuse has been thrown at it. Don't fall for a salespersons story that it will look great after 7 years worth of Times Square traffic. It won't! If this is the type of traffic, you are anticipating, stick with laminate or tile.

Think about it. When your dog is running on your hardwood floor, at one point while it's momentarily airborne, its entire weight transfers to its front legs. Now if you have a heavy dog, all that weight is being put on its front claws as it gets ready to launch off them for the next stride. So yes, a hardwood will scratch given the right conditions.

How a Top-Loading Washing Machine Works

!±8± How a Top-Loading Washing Machine Works

Doing the laundry used to be an all-day ordeal, washing every piece of clothing by hand, and then hanging it out to dry. The washing machine has been around since 1691, and the first electric washing machine was advertised for sale in 1904, and in 1947 GE introduced the first top-loading washer. With new advances in technology, we have new features such as: child safety locks, variable temperatures, delay start time, and other options. In this article I won't go into any more detail about the history of washers, but I will keep my promise and explain how a top-loading washing machine works.

The top- loading washer has an inner tub where you put your clothes. That tub has a bunch of little holes in it which lets the water drain into the outer tub. The outer tub is solid and it holds the drained water. In the middle of the tub there is an agitator. The agitator moves in a semi-circle, back and forth, submerging your clothes into the water. This movement helps loosen stains, and also distributes the detergent around evenly. The motor is what moves the agitator during the washing cycle, and also again during the spin cycle. In most styles of front loading washing machines the motor actually can run in two directions; clockwise and counter-clockwise. While the motor is in one direction, it works through a transmission (or clutch) which spins the inside tub up to 800 rotations per minute (rpm). This causes the water, by centrifugal force, to be pressed out of the clothes, and then the water is pumped out of the washer. When the motor is running in the opposite direction, it uses the transmission to move the agitator during its cleaning cycle.

The water inlet valve, or the fill valve, is what controls the temperature of the water that enters the washer. This water valve has three components which are: a hot water solenoid, a cold water solenoid, and a mixing valve body. When electricity flows to either of the solenoids, water pours through the valve and goes into the inside tub. If the electricity stops, then the water will not flow through. This inlet valve also has three hoses attached to it, one for hot water, one for cold water, and one that is directed to the inner tub to fill it with water.

Next, I'll explain the timer and start switch. The timer is usually identified by the biggest knob on the control panel. Sometimes that is not the case; timers can also be an electronic display or a fully electronic interface. The timer basically tells the washer what to do at a certain time and for how long, and it also provides electricity to those components that need it and at a specific time as well. When you set the timer to the cycle which you want to use, you either push or pull the timer knob to start the washer. A top loading washer can also have several selector knobs/switches, which are most often located next to the timer knob. These switches can have several different functions such as: water temperature, water level, spin speed, etc.

Some types of washing machines use what is called a coupler to attach the motor directly to the transmission; it makes the connection without needing a belt. Most other washers use a belt to connect the motor to the pump or transmission. If the tub or agitator were to become jammed, the belt serves as a "weak link", and it would fail, instead of damaging the transmission or other important parts of the washer. The motor can usually start up in less than a second, which is a little harsh for some inner components of a washer, so most washers use an automatic clutch to lessen the effect of the motor starting up. When you lift the lid on a washer, most of the inner parts stop, however, on all machines the spin cycle stops. This brings the drum to a halt, so most washers use a special braking unit which is similar to the brakes of a car.

In summary, I hope after reading this article you have a better understanding on how a front-load washing machine works, and how all the components work together to get your clothes clean.

Best Running Shoes Selection Criteria

!±8± Best Running Shoes Selection Criteria

The best running shoes will give you super human strength. With the right running shoes you'll never lack motivation to wake up in the morning to go running or finish that long run. Sound a little too much like fantasy? You might be surprised to find that the best running shoes for you would work a small miracle in the motivation and performance that you get from them. The big question is how on earth do you find the best pair of running shoes for YOU?

I can't tell you how many articles I've read recently that talk about how to find the best running shoes. Don't get me wrong, some of them do have a valid information that can help you decide, but in a lot of cases they just miss the point or focus on one aspect of running shoes.

One article that seems to have taken a slightly more scientific approach was published by Consumer Reports (CR). In the article they list out six categories used to evaluate the best running shoes. Here they are as a quick list and in the order that CR thought they had most priority.

Fit Cushioning Stability Flexibility Breathability Weight

These are in fact very important, but how can you apply these six measurements for yourself and YOUR feet? Also, how do you know that the priority given to these six categories will be the same for you? Let's take a look and see what we find.

Fit is important, not doubt about it. But fit is a tricky subject due to foot length, width, personal preference, etc. In an interview I did once with a professional runner, he indicated that when he got a new pair of running shoes he wanted his toes right up against the end of the shoe. He didn't want any room at all. But, when he sells running shoes to other people, he always suggests that they leave just under a half inch of room for the toes. Which way is right?

In this first case, the answer will clearly be different for every person, and what you might do before you go looking for new running shoes, assess a few things. Do you have wide feet? Do you have high arches? Do you require other special accommodations? With these in mind, you can often find shoe manufacturers that accommodate a particular aspect of your running shoe needs and save yourself from having to try on a bunch of different shoes and finally settle for a pair that isn't "as bad" as the others.

One example is that Reebok makes shoes for wider feet. Many of the specialty running stores don't carry Reebok, and so they might try to sell you a shoe that's not wide, and ends up feeling longer on your feet. Knowing before you go can make a huge difference and ensure that you get the running shoes with the best fit.

Next is cushioning, and you might be tempted to think right off the bat that you want all the cushioning that you can get. Well, you're right, and wrong. It seems to be that the more expensive the shoe the more cushioning you get. This is great, but may not be as necessary for someone that is running very few miles per day or per week. If you're a casual runner it might be that you get all the cushioning you need from a less expensive pair.

If, on the other hand, you run five or more miles per day and you repeat that several times throughout the week, you might want to consider a more expensive shoe. You will also want to cycle your shoes out more frequently. There is growing evidence that the quality of your running shoes can affect your health and motivation.

One example of how it can effect motivation has to do with how you feel after a run. If you finish a run and feel beat up and hammered, this might be an indication that you don't have enough cushion in your running shoes. If you associate this negative feeling with running, it can be very difficult to get out running as often as you would like/need. If a more expensive pair of running shoes made you feel better after a run, and therefore made it easier to get out the door, would it be worth it?

The categories of stability and flexibility are much more personal. For example, the stability of a shoe will depend on your individual tendency to pronate or supinate and the strength of your ankles. This can be a really important decision since running in a shoe that doesn't accommodate your biomechanics can possibly promote injury. I won't give any advice other than to ask a professional.

Finally you end up with breathability and weight. Do these matter for you? Well, some questions that might help you decided include the following: Do your feet sweat a lot? Do you run long distances? What is the temperature when you're running? What type of socks to you wear. As it turns out, I like a shoe that breaths a lot and weighs as little as possible, and I think that my preference is pretty common.

So will the best running shoes really transform you into a super hero? Probably not, but they can have a huge effect on your motivation and performance. Remember to do some research before you start shopping so that you don't end up in a brand or type of shoe that will never be the best running shoe for you. Don't hesitate to ask for advice, but do make sure that the person giving the advice is a runner and not some shoe clerk that's never run in his life.

Krazed and Dose - Drop a Stack Remix

Krazed and Dose are two rappers from the Lower East Side I began to work with in November. This is a Promo song for their upcoming mix tape. So far most of the recording, mixing and mastering have been done by me and some of the Production. I am anxious to hear what they do on the first beat they bought, I get tired of listening to my beats with no vocals on them and I don't like to rap anymore so when I get hungry individuals that are about their business I am eager to work with them. I will more then likely be Engineering and producing the mix tape at EastSide Sound Recording studios and working with Automatik Musik on the Production tip. The Mix tape is going to be Hosted by TUSABE.COM and THE ARKITECH'S very own DJ ETHER. Blends and remixes will be a collaboration between the two of us.
